Settings regarding the whole building

From Fronter Help

Jump to: navigation, search

Sometimes referred to as Global settings.

As a Top administrator for the whole building you can change some settings that will affect the building. Some are only available to a Super User under system to safeguard against accidental incorrect use or to store new features awaiting release. Some are available via Fronter support only. It is important to bear in mind that changes made in the global settings will have an impact on all users in all sub structures - so caution is needed. The default settings are designed to meet most common needs.

Note: Changes in settings are typically cached, so usually you will see them take effect after you've logged out and logged in again.

The list of settings is lengthy, which is why we find it convenient to group them by themes. The themes have been assigned a sequence of numbers and each setting has a 3-digit number as a unique identification.

100 series - Navigation

101 New room selector

The room selector is the drop down in the top frame. If this setting is turned On and saved, then users will see:

  • Display all rooms This gives the user a view of all the rooms he is a member of.
  • Rooms not visited shows rooms the user is a member of, but has not yet visited.
  • Favourites are rooms each user has decided to display in the room selector. When a user goes to Display all rooms she has the option to add rooms as favourites. These will then always be displayed in the selector
  • Recently visited are rooms that are not in the favourite list, but which the user has visited them since the last log in. These will not be in the list the next log in.

If the value is set to Off, then the room selector will always display all rooms the user is a member of and there will be no option to add favourite rooms.

102 Placement of the guided tour, logo and customise on the Today page

These items are set to appear at the top of the Today page by default. The setting can be changed to place these items at the bottom of the Today page if preferred.

103 Add link to contact card on the Today page (only when guided tour and customise is displayed at the bottom of the Today Page

If setting 102 has been set to bottom, and 301 (see below) has been set to On, then setting 103 can be switched on if appropriate. It will display a link Contact details in the top left of the Today page. The link will be a shortcut to the contact card, so users can access their personal information without having to go via their home page.

104 Add the option Rooms not visited in the room selector

This option can be added to the room selector, if the new room selector is used. The new room selector only displays those rooms you have chosen as favourites; corridors are not shown. If the option Rooms not visited is added to this new room selector, rooms the user has been added to, but not visited are displayed here. They will disappear from this tab after the first visit.

105 URL to help

Some users have created their own help system. The URL to that page is written in the value field of this setting will be the default choice when users click Help in the top right hand corner.

106 Log out URL

By default, users are directed back to the log in page when clicking Log out in the top right hand corner. If other options are desired, type the required URL in the value field.

107 When using Internal links, add the category Published pages

If this setting is set to On, when an internal link is initiated - the category Published Pages will appear and be available for selection. Published pages are pages that have the option Add to frontpage ticked. This is useful as a quick method of linking to a page rather than having to navigate through a resource folder to find the page to link to. The default is Off.

108 Global RSS feed

This setting allows for the defining of a global RSS feed that appears as a strip feed at the top of the Today page for all users within the building. Only available via Fronter support.

109 Display navigation trail in resource folder

Will display room - tool - folder - subfolders as a trail of clickable links on top of a page when opening documents/files for fast and easy navigation. Only available via Fronter support.

200 series - Resource tools

201 Display resource folder information as default

The default is Off. If switched to On, the folders link within a room (top right hand side of the page) will show resource information rather than resource folder structure as the initial view. To see the resource information when the folder structure is the default, click in the checkbox resource information. Resource information displays information such as who has created the resources, your access, for who this folder is available. It is here you add a sticky to an element, and it is here you organise the display of pages.

202 Set simple Resource folder view as default for new rooms

The default is Off. If switched to On Simple resource folder view ensures that when a resource folder is opened a simple layout is used. Otherwise the folder opens and shows the resource tree structure on the left. If Simple view is on, the structure tree can still be viewed using the folder icon (top right hand side of the page). This setting can be adjusted by a room creator when creating a new room or by editing the room properties after creation.

Note: Initial views when entering a resource folder will depend upon possible combinations selected for settings 201 and 202. For example, if 201 is on and 202 is off then entering a resource folder will show resource information immediately.

203 Simple view on frontpage tool as default

This setting is On by default and this would be the recommended setting. Simple view on the Frontpage tool ensures that when the frontpage shows, it displays the Frontpage across the width of the frame. If switched off, when entering the Frontpage, the resource tree will be visible in the left side of the display frame.

204 Allow stickies on elements

The setting is off by default. If switched On, this setting allows the addition of stickies (personal messages) on objects. When a user opens a page, document, discussion etc within a room and then clicks the folder icon in a room (top right hand side of room) the resource folder structure will be visible in the left hand side of the viewing pane. If the checkbox resource information is ticked, the user will see an input box called Object stickies. A note or comment can be entered in the box and saved. The sticky note will be visible here to the user. The note is specific to the object being viewed in the right pane within the room.

The user can add sticky notifications on the Today page to be able to see their personal object stickies. A copy of the sticky will also go into the inbox of room members and the owner of the object the sticky was attached to. When the sticky is clicked on by the object owner he/she will see the link to redirect them to the object referred to. The sticky also has an attachment clip symbol that acts a shortcut to the object.

205 Hide folders in front page tool for all users except the room owners

When pages are created, an associated folder with the same name as the page and with _files as a suffix is also created. This folder stores object resources placed on the page e.g. images and links.

This setting makes the associated page resource folders hidden for all users except room owners and is switched On by default.

206 Forum open in new window When a forum is created, the default option is that it will open within the Fronter frame. Choosing this setting, will switch the default to 'Open forum in a new window'.

208 Enable resource folder search

The default value is On. This enables you to search the content within a room. Within a resource folder, click on the search link (top right hand side). You will have options to search for content by keyword (free text), by content related to users within the room or groups within the room. Using the advanced link, you can search by dates and element type. You can even search the entire room from within a single resource folder.

209 Enable creative commons (Copyright terms) No longer in use for ordinary buildings.

Enable Dropbox

When set to On students can link their Dropbox accounts to the Assignment tool. That way they can transfer files from Dropbox to assignments via tablets etc.

300 series - Contacts and Search

301 Homepage as default in contactcard

The default for this setting is Off. If switched On, when a user clicks on their own log in name, instead of simply opening the contact card details, a homepage will be displayed with resource information to the left. The page is a personal home page that can be developed by the user. A link to the actual contact details will be available within the resource information dialogue. Someone's Personal homepage can be viewed by other users in the institution that have view contact rights over the user (normally users in the same group / room). Note: Refer also to setting 103

302 Number of users to be displayed per page before the list gets divided

This setting refers to the number of users to display on a single page within a room (looking at member lists, test statistics etc). At the bottom of the page there will be a navigation to the next page, and an overview of the total amount of participants and pages.

The users can still override this setting by typing a number, in the input box number of elements and clicking enter when on the actual page.

303 Default number of elements to be displayed as result of a single search

The value set here will be the upper limit of returns on a search for contacts in a room. For example - using the search tool to enroll users. The default value is 1000.

304 Define width in pixels of the image in the contact card 305 Define height in pixels of the image in the contact card

The contact card image will automatically be scaled to the value that is defined here; the default setting is width 73 pixels and height 110 pixels. If the pictures that are used in the contact card do not have the same dimensions as the defined height and width they will be scaled. The standard setting gives a 1.5 ratio between the height and width.

306 External e-mail separator

The standard separating symbol is a comma. You can change this to a semicolon if desired.

307 Allow full content search

The contents search searches through all text in discussions, documents etc that a user has the rights to see. If this is desired, it is also necessary to contact Fronter to enable indexing of the building contents. This search is available within the 'Contacts' tool (search tool) on the personal toolbar - Click on the Tab 'Search Content'.

Because of capacity considerations we do not recommend that this is turned on for large installations. The setting is Off by default.

308 Start FIM / See who's online as default when logging in

Not in use anymore.

309 Display all users in FIM (Fronter Instant Messenger)

Not in use anymore.

310 Enable Individual learning plan (ILP) tool

With this setting enabled you can add the tool ILP to the personal toolbar.

311 number of days before updating the list of people a user is allowed to see in FIM

312 FIM should show an estimated number of users online until it is able to count the actual number

Not in use anymore.

313 Show an error pop-up window if there are problems with the network connection to the FIM server

Not in use anymore.

314 Display who's online instead of FIM

Not in use anymore.

315 See who's online - Minute timespan

Not in use anymore.

316 Extend contact rights with tutor and subject teacher

This setting provides additional access rights Tutor and Subject teacher. These rights are an essential part of the Absence tool and the ILP Tool. Today most installations have this feature as a default, and for them this setting has no function. In many buildings this setting is On and appropriate rights already assigned as part of the Integration of (MIS) Management Information System data. Otherwise the default is Off.

317 Enable instant user creation based on a template

This setting has to be enabled for the instant user option to appear when creating a new contact via the contact card method. Instant users are user accounts created with the option to e-mail the new user automatically generated log in credentials.

318 Enable old weekview view on Today page

This is legacy view. The week view of the calendar on the Today page or in a room becomes more compressed and loses the clickable field option. This is Off by default as the calendar with new appointment click in and larger fields is now the standard.

319 Add search field to top frame (will not work with all designs)

To be activated by Fronter for installations that are indexed for search.

400 series - Rights

401 Define room access right to send mass mail from participant list

Here you define which users are allowed to send e-mails to several participants at the same time. There are three options:

  • No limits (default) - there are no defined limits.
  • Limit access for students - Students accessing the member list in a room will be able to send e-mail to more than one participant but will not be allowed to select to send to all members in the list.
  • Delete access only - Only users with Delete or Owner access will see the send e-mail button in the membership list. This then effectively removes student's access to send mail from the room members (participants) list.

402 Only allow room owners to send collective stickies

If you activate this setting only room owners will be able to send several stickies to several participants simultaneously through the members (participants) list in a room. Others have no option to send stickies. The setting is inactive by default. To activate it change the value from 0 to 1 in the value input box.

403 Allow users with write access to write messages in rooms

The default rule in a room is that you need at least delete access in order write room messages. If you would like users with write access to also have this ability, change the default value from Off to On and Save.

404 Activate final assessment and learning goals in the portfolio tool

The standard view in the room portfolio tool is Statistics. This feeds back assessment results and room access data to users. When switched on, setting 404 adds another tab to the portfolio tool - Final Assessment. This area of the portfolio allows the viewing of personal work copied to the portfolio as part of the final e-portfolio collection and also allows for teacher final comments and evaluation against goals and work produced. This setting is Off by default.

405 Activate result matrix in the portfolio tool

This setting is activated by default. In the tools Portfolio and Statistics this setting will give you an overview of the hand-ins and the tests when you choose the tab Result matrix. In many respects it is a grade book view of results. It gives you the ability to add and mark/comment an assignment manually which can be a great advantage for work that cannot be submitted electronically. It is also the place where Final Grade settings are controlled and viewed.

406 Public room as default when creating a new room (only when use the public room functionality)

This setting is Off by default. If you have enabled setting 407 and therefore the option of a public room, activating this setting would make all new rooms created as public rooms by default.

407 Use the Public room functionality

This setting is Off by default. If activated, it is possible when a room is created, or via edit properties for an existing room, to mark the room as public. A public room means that the room will be publicly listed for all users within the same building. The listing is available within Display All Rooms. Everybody will be able to view the description of the room without being a member. It is possible to apply for membership, which has to be approved by the owner of the room.

Once membership is approved, public rooms are shown in the room selector and you can enter the room in a different part of the building as if it is within your own local installation. Membership can also be rejected.

408 When sending mail to multiple users from lists put the e-mail addresses in the

When sending multiple e-mails, it is possible to choose the default setting for the addresses - these are the options:

  • to field
  • cc field
  • bcc field

The default is cc field

409 SMS default prefix

This setting sets the default phone number prefix (country code) that is to be used for SMS messages, if this feature has been purchased. For instance, in UK installations the value set needs to be "+44". The default is "+47"

410 Default SMS Sender Identification

This setting controls the text that is shown as the sender of the SMS message (when the message is viewed on a cell phone). The name of the school would be a good choice. The text can be up to 11 characters. Fronter is default.

411 Maximum allowed number of visible recipients in outgoing e-mails (To and Cc fields)

This setting is for hiding recipients in e-mails when the number is above the set value. If you exceed the value you will get an error message. Then you have to move the recipients to the bcc-field instead.

412 Trigger a warning when trying to send an e-mail with recipients count exceeding this value

Here you can set a limit for the number of recipients in an e-mail before a warning appears. When the warning appears, you then have to confirm sending these e-mails. The default is 100.

413 Enable automatic grading in result matrix

This has to be activated by Fronter support. When the value is set to On, a new setting under the tool tab will appear : Grading systems where administrator will have to define a grade system.

416 Show options for old goal module

This setting is Off by default. Details on this setting will be updated when the relevant new functionality to update the old goal module is in place.

417 Allow tutor to create ILP template

When switched On (default) teachers with tutor access to one or more group, can create an ad hoc ILP for their group(s).

500 series - Layout and design

501 Users first and surname in top frame

Choose whether the participants’ first and surnames should be shown in the top frame next to the room selector where it functions as a link to their contact card, and to the homepage if this feature is available.

502 Display personal tools as its own bar on top

This is an option only for schools with customised design or Fronter92.

The default is On'. Personal tools will therefore by default display in the top frame. If this setting is switched OFF, The personal tools will be contained within a tab called 'My Personal Room' next to the room selector. When clicked, the tools will display within a personal room down the left hand frame.

Note: Whilst this setting can be activated for the entire building, personal control of the display layout is available within a users contact card under personal settings if administrators have enabled visibility of the settings within the group's contact card access. The setting is: 'Show personal tools as a separate line on top'

Note: that in this choice a personally defined button cannot be used in the personal list of tools to get directly into a room. Also, the FIM will still be placed on the top, directly to the right of the room selector.

503 Display picture of the forum creator in the main contribution field

In all forums (except the brainstorm, which is anonymous), a picture of the owner of the contributions is displayed. As default a picture of the person who has written the main contribution is also shown (assuming of course that personal images have been uploaded onto personal contact cards). If you do not want to show the picture of the forum creator within the forum, switch this option Off.

504 Allow all users with write access to reply to hot seat contributions

This refers to Question and Answer forums. Normally, the forum creator assigns one or more moderators. This setting, if switched On overrides the local setting, globally allowing all members with write access in a room to reply to the questions in this forum type.

505 Display the users own forum contributions in the forum containers of the today page

Default is On. If you want the users not to see their own contributions, please contact Fronter support for de-activating.

506 Enable absence in the Today page calendar

This setting if activated will allow the display of scheduled lessons for a user within their calendar on the Today page, as defined in the Absence Module.

800 series - Miscellaneous and specialised

Fronter support has sometimes needed to turn some settings on or off, depending on circumstances. Some customers order specific solutions, which are not designed for global customer use and thus many of the 800 settings are only available directly through Fronter Support. However, a few miscellaneous settings are available in this series. Other specialised settings within this and other series which are not visible but may be useful to apply are listed separately at the end of this help section.

801 Add brand in the top frame

Special adaptaon, to have the logo in the top frame.

802 Room creator get corridor creator rights (for wizard)

Providing wizard is activated, setting status of 802 to On, enables room creators to create corridors as well.

803 Set the size of more info fields display (from the contact card) in the list of the members in a room

Set value for the number of characters in the more info field of the contact card when displayed in a room. Default is 100 characters.

804 Use the wizard to create a room

Default is Off. Activate to start the wizard.

806 Allow multiple e-mail domain admins

Made for one particular customer to set local administrators to govern the e-mail accounts belonging to their schools within the building.

807 IMS Enterprise import

A form for the feature Digital exam in Fronter.

808 Enable template rooms

Activate to enable administrators to assign template rooms to corridors. This feature is only for solutions with a room import.

809 Disable the stickies inbox

It's possible to contact Fronter support to get the feature Stickies made unavailable for all users. This will also negatively affect the possibility to send SMS. Note: This choice can in stead easily be left to the local administrators through the setting U18, which can be applied to org.units down the structure.

810 Use the new Webfronter tool

Activate this for access to the Webfronter template Universal and automatic updates made in this template.

811 Permit custom CSS in rooms

This is a rather advanced setting, to be activated by Fronter support. If this setting if active, it provides an option to customise the CSS properties for the room. When editing the properties of a room an option is provided to download the default CSS; this can be amended and the custom CSS file uploaded.

812 Available help languages

The value box here defines the available help system languages. This listing can be amended when new help languages become available. If from the Today page you change the display language for the interface and then click on help, the help will display in the new chosen language if it is a language supported by the help system. Note: Not all languages available in Fronter support full help systems.

813 Enable time limited accounts

A special feature to be activated by Fronter support. Enables the manual creation/import of users that will have a time limited access to the Fronter installation. Contacts are otherwise managed like any manually created users.

900 series - Advanced settings

Under this series you will find specific settings and more advanced settings.

900 Enable advanced sitewide settings (settings in the 900 series)

This setting turns on/off the display of all of the alternatives related to the 900-series. After you have changed this setting, you would have to refresh your web-browser.

901 Display the adjacent room navigator in the frame for properties

Within a room, when you click the folders icon (top right hand side of room) the resource folder structure will be visible in the left hand side of the viewing pane. If the box for resource information is ticked, and this setting is activated, a navigator to all the rooms and sub corridors within the corridor where you are placed will be displayed.

By clicking on the option Adjacent rooms you will get a room list. If the room names are incomplete you will get the whole name by holding the cursor over the room name.

902 Display number of rooms in the corridor

This is a customer specific setting. If this setting is activated resources information will display all rooms that are located in the same corridor as the room that you are in. In addition sub corridors will be displayed, together with the number of rooms in these. This is displayed if the room list in archive information is made available.

903 Return to the resources after creating a forum

If this setting is switched On, when a forum creator saves a new forum, they will be redirected to the resource folder rather than refreshing into the forum itself. The default is Off.

904 Display user name in member list in a room

This setting, if activated, will display the usernames in the members list in a room for those with the access right to see user names.

Note that the default setting is that normal users cannot see the others' user names, and so this field will not be available for them. This setting is most convenient for those who administrate the installation.

905 Only owner can move elements in a room

If you set the value to 1 for this setting, only participants with owner rights are allowed to move elements within a room. The default is that everybody with delete or owner access can move documents, links etc.

906 Allow for groups beneath groups in the org. unit structure 907 Allow mixing of groups and corridors in the org. unit structure

Both settings are activated by default. The first allowing for the creation of groups beneath groups and the second, allowing by default an ability to create both groups and corridors under the same node. Even when groups within groups is allowed, changes (settings made on group level) will stop taking effect in the third level.

Whilst quite often complex structures should be avoided to reduce confusion in system administration, the options are active to allow maximum flexibility. Administrators will use their appreciation of the structure to determine the most logical layout of organisation units.

908 Display text on the admin button 909 Display text on the help button 910 Display text on the log out button

For customers with their own design, if the design has icons for these functions, it is possible to set the value to off, and thus remove the text.

911 Display text New contribution instead of Save in Forum

When adding a new forum contribution the default is a Save button at the bottom of the editor to save and complete your contribution. If this setting is switched ON then the text on the button will be New Contribution. The button nonetheless performs the save function.

912 Default configuration for the Today page

There is a default Today page when setting up new users in Fronter. This setting makes it possible to change the default Today page for all new users.

Method: 1. Create a Today page as you want it to be, using Customise today. 2. Select New tool. Right click on the page and view source. Scroll down to the very bottom and find the text starting with Todayconfig strings is: Copy the code following. 3. Click edit on setting 912 4. Paste this code in as the string in the value box and save.

Note: This may not work the same way with all browser, this method works for Internet Explorer.

913 Default configuration for the Room today page

There is a default Room today page when creating a new room in Fronter. It is possible to change this set up when creating new rooms. The method is the same as the one described for setting 912.

Note: The room owner can change the Room today at a later stage by choosing Customise the Room today from the dropdown menu within the room tool.

914 Show forum type above the description field

When creating a forum the default setting is to type the title, a description and then choose the forum type. By changing the setting to Yes, it makes it possible to write a title, choose the forum type and then at the end write a description.

915 Place Page as first option in the menu Create in resource folder

Instead of placing the options in two columns when creating a document from a resource folder, this setting set to On will display them in a vertical order. It will also display options for external documents directly.

Note that this will make page the default option, and customising content will therefore not take effect when this setting is on.

916 Hide the option Learning path under Create button in resource folders

This option is designed for organisations that may not use Fronter for education. It effectively removes the option to create a learning path.

917 Use Fronter colour selector

This option is not active by default. If the value is switched to Yes, instead of the advanced colour picker that has 40 colour options, a simple colour picker with 16 colours will become active. (This service is only available to customers in England).

918 Shortcut to the field write New contribution in the forum

This setting makes it easier for the participants so they do not have to scroll to the last contributor in order to write their own contribution, or click go to bottom to see the new contribution link. If switched On, another link go to last page will appear near the top of the forum. This link will immediately open the editor for a new contribution.

919 Alphabetically sort of forum types

If switched to Yes, when you create a new forum, instead of the standard layout that lists forum types in order of popularity, the forum types will be listed alphabetically: Brainstorm, Conversation, Debate, Discussion, Question and answer.

920 Possible to add homepages when selecting internal link in editor

This setting makes it possible to add a personal homepage as an internal link within the editor.

Method: 1. Select the object to link from in the editor. 2. Select internal link. 3. In the Private room dropdown select Link to another users home page. 4. Search for the user. 5. Select the user and save.

Note: Use of the Personal Homepage needs to be active (setting 301)

921 Restrict admin button to users with high access

The access right Contact Creator gives users with this rights level the admin link since they have the rights to create users and create groups. If you change the setting to High access, only administrators (administrator access for contacts) will have access to the admin tool. Contact creators will still be able to create contacts from Contacts on the personal tool bar.

922 Display Delete and Edit buttons in contact search

Some find that it is simply too easy to delete a contact using the contact search. If you switch this setting Off, buttons for Delete and Edit contacts will not be displayed. To delete a contact you will have to go into the contact card itself to select delete.

Note: there is a recycle bin for deleted contacts.

924 Enable possibility for automatically generating individual folders in the resources

The default setting is On, which means staff when creating a folder within resources can select the option Individual Folders. This creates a storage folder that contains individual personalised storage folders for every user in the room with write level access. Only the student owning the folder and teacher(s) with room owner access will have access to each folder if no further adjustments are made.

925 SSO: URL grabber postfix

Accessing Fronter from another application it is possible to use Single-Sign-On (SSO). This setting provides a value box to type in part of a URL which will be pasted in to the end of SSO urls generated by Fronter.

926 SSO: URL grabber prefix

Accessing Fronter from another application it is possible to use Single-Sign-On (SSO). This setting provides a value box to type in part of a URL which will be pasted in to the beginning of SSO urls generated by Fronter.

927 Automatic export for protocol

Using the absence tool it is possible to export the data to a suitable administration system. This setting should be set to On where such exports are relevant.

928 Use a faster method to communicate with external IMAP servers

This setting is On by default. If your e-mail uses an IMAP server it is sometimes a slow process to show all e-mails with attachments. This setting hides the attachments, until the relevant e-mail is opened. This increases the speed of the application.

929 Change forum contribution owner when editing

On by default. If for example a student has a forum contribution that the teacher feels is inappropriate, the teacher can edit the contribution and then automatically gets ownership of it. The student then loses their editing rights on the contribution.

930 maximum value for number of recipients e-mail size in megabytes

Please contact Fronter support for activating. The setting sets limits for the amount that can be sent in one e-mail.

932 Password regime

The default is Classic which allows passwords that are simple or complex. If the setting is changed to Modern the password must contain at least 8 characters of 3 different types. Here is an example of a Modern password: sy89p2NBV. With Modern as the preferred setting, a Suggest password button will appear in the log in info section of the contact card when creating a new user to assist with a randomly generated complex password.

933 Automatic UAS synchronization:

Please contact Fronter support for activating. This is for solutions with a Student Administration System and enables the communication between the SAS/MIS and the UAS on a regular basis, e.g. updating every night.

934 Hide scormplayer toolbar

This is set to No by default. If activated, it removes the top navigation bar in the scorm player. This will maximise space for the player, but might also affect some courses that need the built in navigation bar.

935 Allow change of password when the user is currently using LDAP

The default setting is Yes, but in most cases where LDAP is used for password control the setting would be switched to No to prevent users changing passwords.

936 Show this message if changing of LDAP password is not allowed

This setting allows a message to be set that will be visible to users who are not permitted to change LDAP passwords (935 is set to no). The message will be visible within the log in info section of the contact card where the password change option would normally be displayed.

938 Enable Dropbox

Set value to On to allow students to add documents from their own Dropbox accounts to Assignment.
